The Demography of Aging in Japan and the United States
This paper, written for the American Academy of Arts and Sciences’ Aging and Health Symposium, is an overview of the demographic shifts taking place in Japan and the United States. These transitions will, in the next fifty years, lead to a change in the population balance, with a diminished labour force supporting a dramatically increased number of elderly people. The paper assesses the possible impacts of these changes and looks at ways that countries might prepare for them.
